Day of the Dead Photographer Geoff Winningham, A Trail of Marvels

Dancer Press Presents A Trail of Marvels

Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Geoff Winningham has created a series of original books, combining his photography with his own original writing or appropriated text.  In the process, he has explored and documented a wide range of social, cultural, geographical, and historical phenonema. The subjects of his work have ranged from professional wrestlingdestruction derbies, and high school football to vernacular architecture and the landscape of the Gulf Coast of Texas and Mexico.

A Trail of Marvels is an artfully structured narrative of  Winningham’s most important project to date. It is at once a visual documentation and a learned guide to the history and the continuing traditions of the Day of the Dead. This photography book on the Day of the Dead is also a personal memoir of his travels over the past 30 years to photograph that event, and a love poem to the people of Mexico, who welcomed him as he traveled.

GEOFF WINNINGHAM, born in Jackson, Tennessee, earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Rice University and a master’s degree in photography from the Institute of Design at IIT, where he studied with Aaron Siskind and Arthur Siegel. He returned to Houston in 1968 to begin a career in photography, documentary filmmaking, and journalism.  He joined the art department at Rice University in 1969, and he continues to teach there today, holding the Lynette S. Autrey Chair in the Humanities.
