These are the stories behind the unique and iconic buildings that have shaped San Antonio-and the people who created them-helping it to become America's seventh-largest city. From the tallest skyscraper in Texas to the largest wildlife land bridge in the United States, construction over the past 100 years has established the Alamo City as a leader in architectural innovation and building technology. Authors Doug and Michele McMurry provide an insightful and entertaining narrative, drawing from archived material and long-forgotten historic documents, as well as the personal recollections of the men and women whose families pioneered the growth of Texas' most unique city.
Doug McMurry holds a degree in government from The University of Texas at Austin and began his professional career working in political campaigns and serving in city, county, and state government. He worked in positions of progressing responsibility with not-for-profit construction trade associations before acting as president of the San Antonio Chapter of the Associated General Contractors for twenty-eight years, during which he wrote about construction companies and the growth of San Antonio. A strong advocate of community service, Doug has also led several city boards and committees, and was named an honorary member of the San Antonio chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 2022.
Michele McMurry, the founder of McMurry Communications, holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Texas A&M University. Her experience as a professional writer and editor spans more than twenty years and includes crafting marketing and public relations content for businesses as well as San Antonio's leading creative agencies. She has also written for and edited, trade, food, lifestyle, business, and construction publications in Texas and Florida, including cover stories for the San Antonio Business Journal and San Antonio TASTE magazine, for which she acted as editor-in-chief.
