Grace is an ordinary nine-year-old going into 3rd grade when she discovers she’s anything but ordinary. Grace can fly! And when her best friend, Adrian, and new student, Mia, find out, adventure follows.
Grace, Mia, and Adrian learn about family bonds, friendship, and facing their fears together when their class goes on a field trip to the swimming quarry. But will Grace’s secret be safe or will she risk it all to save a friend?
Blending Spanish customs and language seamlessly into an adventure story with a dash of magical realism, this book is sure to delight children’s imaginations and beg the questions, “what if I could fly?” and “what would I do to help a friend?”
From the Author:
The inspiration for The Adventures of Amazing Grace came from a dream. I had a vivid dream one night where I discovered I could fly. The next evening, my eight-year-old daughter, Sophia, asked for a bedtime story. I began, “There once was a girl named…”, “Grace!” my daughter interrupted. I continued, “and Grace realized she could fly…”.
The bedtime story ended up lasting weeks, and at some point, Sophia begged me to write it all down. I would race to the computer every night after my daughter fell asleep to capture the story. The next two years were spent writing and editing, sharing and receiving feedback from beta readers, and finally bringing this story to life in The Adventures of Amazing Grace.
In reading other books with my daughter, I noticed the lack of positive, exciting stories for this age group that feature strong female protagonists and healthy friendships. I also realized how underrepresented children that had grown up in bilingual households are in children’s literature. The book is written in a dyslexic-friendly font for accessibility.
This book is the first in a planned series in which children follow along as Grace, Mia and Adrian discover family secrets and their own special gifts. The second book is currently in production!
Third grader, Grace, and her cousin, Mia, discover the thrill of flying, face their fears to help their friend Adrian, and learn about the ties that bind families together in this chapter book that targets eight- to twelve-year-old readers.
