An Evening with Amie Whittemore & Eileen Dolan

author photoAmie Whittemore’s Nest of Matches is a lavish declaration of the beauty of the natural world, queer identity, and of the imagination set free. Whittemore’s third collection explores the complexities of love—romantic, familial, and love for place—and wonders at cycles of life, finding that: “Every habit / even love—strangest / of them all—offers exhaustion / and renewal.” Moving seamlessly from meditations on the moon’s phases to explorations of dream spaces to searches for meaning through patterns of love and loss, Whittemore’s work embodies the mysteries of dichotomies—grief and joy, consciousness and unconsciousness, habit and spontaneity—and how they coexist to create our identities. Throughout the collection, Whittemore reveals how interior nature manifests into exterior habits and how physical landscapes shape the psyche.

Amie Whittemore (she/her) is the author of the poetry collections Glass Harvest (Autumn House Press), Star-Tent: A Triptych (Tolsun Books), and Nest of Matches (Autumn House, 2024). She was the 2020-2021 Poet Laureate of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. She teaches creative writing at Eastern Illinois University and directs MTSU Write, a from-home creative writing mentorship.

Eileen Dolan currently resides in San Antonio, TX where she predominantly writes poetry and Creative Nonfiction.  She has an MFA, in Creative Writing, Poetry from Texas State University. Her work has appeared  in Minerva, Vol 8; oddball magazine’s St Patrick’s Day Parade of Poets edition, 2014; and she contributed a two dimensional Word Sculpture for the 2020 online Global Art Project, Telephone. She organized produced and participated in two, two woman Round Robin readings, Surface Tension in 2017, and It Takes Two in 2018. She has a flash prose piece in Rumors, Secrets & Lies an Anthology published by Anhinga Press, of works centered around Pregnancy, Abortion, & Choice; and two poems in two separate projects published by Bell Press. Rituals a poetry anthology, and a 2023 Poetry Planner with her Tanka featured in the month of July. Recently she has also had a poem published by Cosmic Daffodil. Her work purposefully challenges notions of poetic syntax and caesura, blissfully pushing forms and formats to the edges of acceptability. Her current favorite poetic approaches influencing her works are a combined mixing of Emily Dickinson's and E E Cummings. They go together surprisingly well, especially in her current project of iambic pentameter-ized Golden Shovel Sonnets!
