Michael Earney, The A-Z Book of Cats

Writing is more direct, in many ways a simpler means of communicating. We all use words, we know what words mean or we think we do. Nuance, the double entendre, irony, sarcasm, misleading statements and outright lies make things more complicated. that saying, ‘a picture’s worth a thousand words’ is never more true than when the written word has to somehow convey the expressiveness of the spoken word. I have enormous respect for the great writers, good writers and really anyone that can sit down and write a book or article. I never thought I would seek to join those ranks.

As a fine art painter, ceramic sculptor and documentary film maker Michael Earney developed the skills of observation, construction and integration, all of which he now employs as a story teller. In his non-fiction works, the ability to illustrate, design and write, lends books like, “The A to Z book of Birds” and The A to Z book of Weeds and other useful Plants” their unique character.

About The A-Z Book of Cats:
Want the purrr-fect gift for the cat lover in your life? Cat got your tongue? Never mind, The A to Z book of Cats will say it all for you. It’s the cat’s meow.

Not only have cats found a place in our hearts and homes, but they are also part of our history, culture, and arts. This book with illustrations by the author and children, while it’s not cat-a-clysmic, will appeal to all ailurophiles, (that’s cat lovers).

Failure to purchase this book would not be a cat-a-strophe and I certainly won’t go cat-a-tonic but, if you do, I predict you will find yourself sitting in the catbird’s seat wearing the cat’s pajamas!

While looking at my grand-daughter's books with her it occurred to me that here, at three years old, she can identify images which bear little resemblance to the actual creatures portrayed: whale, giraffe, ostrich, etc. At the zoo she recognizes the elephant, tiger, giraffe, etc. Why, I wondered, do children's books have such simplified renderings of animals?
